The reopening dates for closed sections of Mombasa Road
2 min readTo alleviate the current traffic problem, the Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha) has announced opening dates for the closed parts of Mombasa Road.
Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way have turned Nairobi into a nightmare for many road users since work on the highway began, with continuous traffic backups during rush hours.
Despite the deployment of additional traffic enforcement personnel on certain highways, overcrowding and road accidents have grown commonplace.
Kenha stated in a public notification that the Haile Selassie-University Way roundabout will open on December 15, 2021, and the Gateway Mall will open on December 20, 2021.
The authorities went on to say that some portions of the road, including those under intervention, may continue encounter traffic congestion.
Gateway Mall, where excavation and protection of an oil pipeline crossing under the Expressway is ongoing, the General Motors area, where there is a temporary diversion, and the section between Bunyala Road roundabout and University Way, where there is also some construction, are among the sections where traffic issues may still be experienced.
At the same time, the authorities said that the elevated part is 91.4 percent complete.
The Sh62 billion Nairobi Expressway, which began construction last year, has come at a cost to businesses and residents along Mombasa Road, with vehicles facing traffic jams.
The route will extend 27 kilometers across Nairobi once completed, and it is designed to improve traffic flow in and out of the city center.
The roadway is being built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), which is being funded by a private enterprise. The road will be operated for 27 years by Moja Expressway, a CRBC subsidiary, in order to recuperate funds through toll fees.
