4 min readUnited boss Ralf Rangnick could announce his first January signing before Monday as Man United have transfer interest in Wolves star Ruben Neves.
So far, both Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have had a difficult season at Manchester United.
And the Red Devils’ midfield has played a part, with players like Fred, Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek, Paul Pogba, and Scott McTominay swinging in and out of form.
If they sign Ruben Neves from Wolves, however, he may be United boss Ralf Rangnick first signing to the club.
United were interested in signing Neves, according to Sky Sports at the start of the month.
Since joining Wolves from Porto, the Portugal international has been a steady performer in both the Championship and Premier League.
Even though compatriot Joao Moutinho scored the winning goal, he put in a midfield masterclass as Bruno Lage’s team thrashed United 1-0 at Old Trafford earlier this month.
And, with money set aside from the loan exits of Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, United are willing to add to their roster.
And, if United can capture the Portugal international, he has the potential to be a game-changer on par with Fernandes.
Neves is a conductor, a controller, and a player who can make United work.
Given the troubles with Fred, Matic, McTominay, Pogba, and Van de Beek this season, he has the potential to be just as revolutionary as Fernandes.
And, with Crystal Palace showing interest, a move may be hastened if Van De Beek leaves on loan before the deadline.
Wolves manager Bruno Lage, on the other hand, has stated that Neves is crucial to the club’s plans for the future at Molineux.
“He’s very important, he’s a top player,” he said.
“We talked about him six weeks ago, and I urged him to improve every day, to mature defensively, and to see that he is a defensive midfielder.”
“These are the goals. He understands that when defending, he must remember to work for the team, and that when he has the ball, he must grasp the situation, because it is the game with the ball that gives him the dimension he deserves.
He’s doing it, and he comes to work every day with the mindset of improving and expanding his horizons. ‘Why aren’t you playing for your national team?’ I asked him and a few other players.
“We must remember that we must work for the team when defending, but it is the game with the ball that provides the other dimension.”
“The challenge now is to keep going in that direction.” He performed admirably against Chelsea and Manchester United. He excelled at a variety of games in a variety of settings.
“I’m thrilled because he’s doing what I want and is a good player who can help the team advance.”
