Waiguru lectures Mt Kenya leaders flocking Gachagua Wamunyoro home

Governor Anne Waiguru lashes out at Mt. Kenya leaders engaging Rigathi Gachagua in Wamunyoro
Governor Anne Waiguru lashes out at Mt. Kenya leaders engaging Rigathi Gachagua in Wamunyoro.
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru on Wednesday, February 19, criticised Mt Kenya leaders who have been visiting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence, warning that they would regret their actions.
Speaking at an event in her county, Waiguru faulted the leaders for engaging with the former DP, who, since his impeachment, has taken a leading role in holding the government to account.
The governor, who is allied with the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration, cautioned against the risks of being outside government, adding that Mt Kenya leaders seen at Wamunyoro risk losing out on elective positions.
“I want to tell my fellow leaders from Mt Kenya not to rush to where you are being told to go (Wamunyoro). Because even where you are being told to go, you are not the only one interested in getting a political endorsement to vie for office,” Waiguru stated.
“Even for that person (Gachagua) who wants to create a political party, there will be many people who will want to vie for office through his party. You will end up crammed in that party and may not get a ticket at all,” she added.
Waiguru’s remarks come after numerous leaders from Mt Kenya have been spotted flocking to Gachagua’s home in Wamunyoro, in what is seen as a major political realignment in the region.
This follows Gachagua’s pledge to unveil a political outfit that, according to him, will “shake up” the region and the country’s politics. Over the past few months, Gachagua has been posting images on his social media platforms of various meetings with political, business, and religious leaders at his residence.
This has led many political observers to highlight Wamunyoro as an ‘alternative’ base of power, alongside President William Ruto’s State House and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s Karen residence.
However, in her address, Waiguru dismissed the impending formation of the political party, noting that Gachagua is not eligible to run for office.

Due to his impeachment, Gachagua is barred from contesting public office. However, the matter is currently before the courts, with judges yet to deliver a ruling.
“When these leaders are rushing there (Wamunyoro), are they even sure that the one behind it is fit to run for office? Let us focus on development matters,” the Kirinyaga governor remarked.
Aside from hosting leaders at his home, Gachagua has also connected with other politicians outside the government, with many speculating that the ultimate goal is the formation of a political alliance.
In his political manoeuvres, Gachagua has met Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, and People’s Liberation Party (formerly NARC-Kenya) leader Martha Karua. In various public appearances, Gachagua has vowed to make Ruto the country’s first-ever one-term President.
