Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi, who was arrested on Tuesday, is facing charges of forging academic certificates from 1994.

While appearing at Kiambu Law Courts on Wednesday, the legislator was presented with 6 counts of forging academic certificates and another for failing to attend court on numerous dates.

The charge sheet shows that the first count is forging a Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) certificate between November and December 1994 to secure a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

The second count is that Koimburi forged a certificate of participation in the East African Universities Accession Project from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Technology (JKUAT) between September 2011 and April 2012.

Within the same period, the third count adds, Koimburi secured an allegedly forged certificate from the School of Human Resource Development from JKUAT.

Koimburi’s fourth count is “knowingly and fraudulently” forging a KCSE certificate from KNEC at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on March 8, 2021.

On the same date, the legislator presented his certificate of participation in the East African Universities Accession Project from JKUAT to EACC.

In the sixth count, Koimburi is being charged with presenting his School of Human Resource Development certificate from JKUAT to EACC on the aforementioned date.

The legislator was apprehended outside his home on Tuesday morning and transported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for questioning.

Koimburi, who had previously claimed that the government spent some Ksh.13 billion campaigning for Raila Odinga in the African Union Commission (AUC) elections, was apprehended shortly after leaving his residence on Kenyatta Road in Juja.

Koimburi, a vocal critic of the government, questioned the rationale for the alleged campaign spending, escalating political debate.

His lawyer Ndegwa Njiru had earlier stated that Koimburi was arrested for his remarks on the AUC elections where Raila Odinga lost to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
