A migratory bird that flew 6,000km from Poland electrocuted in Nandi, Kenya

A migratory bird, a white stork bird that flew from Poland to Kenya, has died after being electrocuted at Kimogoon village, Nandi County.

The migratory bird was in the company of thousands of white storks that have been hovering around the North Rift since the onset of heavy rains.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed that the bird was one of the thousands of white stocks that migrate across Africa each year in search of suitable habitat.

The birds, which belong to the Ciconia Ciconia species, are thought to be migrating due to global climate change.

The Embassy of Poland in Nairobi said the bird might have been under supervision in her country.

“East and South Africa are the migratory routes of the Polish storks, seeking mild climate and avoiding the harsh Polish winter. But since I am not an expert, I cannot elaborate more,” an official at the embassy told standard media.

The official added that since the ring reads: GDA?SK, it might have been under the supervision of the Ornithological Station of the Polish Academy of Science in Gda?sk.

On Wednesday night, Elicky Kipyego, a local who discovered the bird, a member of the white stork, flew into electricity cables 50 meters from his house, briefly knocking out power.

“I heard a thunderous noise outside the house, and when I checked out, I discovered a shivering bird on the ground.” After being electrified, it was fighting for its life,” he explained.

He claimed that when he saw the bird was still alive, he retrieved it and brought it into his home.

His attempts to nurse the bird were in vain, and it died an hour later from injuries and a fractured left wing.

The migratory bird, the white stork is a member bird of the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, a sanctuary organization established in Poland.

According to Nandi senior KWS warden Grace Wendot, the sanctuary organization coded the bird as Poland VU4537 and serial number T7897 on the aluminum rings.

Kipyego delivered the bird carcass to the KWS headquarters in Kapsabet, which is located in the region.

“The dead bird has been delivered to us, and it is a trophy for the government. The terrible destiny of the bird will be communicated to the Polish organization in Nairobi “she stated
