Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa and Lukoye Atwoli lands new roles as President Ruto makes new appointments.
In a Gazette notice dated November 2, Peter Ndegwa will now be the new chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology.
His appointment took effect on October 31 and will serve for a period of five years.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint–to be the Chancellor of the Meru University of Science and Technology, for five (5) years, with effect from November 1, 2023,” the notice reads.
Ndegwa replaces Equity Bank boss James Mwangi who is the current chancellor of the Open University of Kenya (OUK).
Mwangi’s tenure at the Meru varsity lapsed on July 20, 2023, having served in the position for two five-year terms.

In addition, Ruto appointed Lukoye Atwoli as the non-executive chairperson of the board of directors of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Lukoye is the son of COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli.
He is set to serve for three years.
Prof Atwoli is a Professor in Psychiatry with extensive leadership, teaching, and academic research experience.
Lukoye Atwoli is a Dean at AKU Medical College, East Africa and Associate Director, Brain and Mind Institute.
He also serves as the President-Elect of the African College of NeuroPsychopharmacology (AfCNP) and is the Secretary-General of the African Association of Psychiatrists.
