IG Koome recalls three police bosses over forced land evictions in Voi, Taita Taveta County following Raila critique of the process.
Three Coast Region commanders were called back by Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on Saturday due to the land eviction exercise that took place in Msambweni Taita Taveta County.
The commanders of the police departments in the Coast Region, Taita Taveta County, and Voi Sub-County were called back to the Kenya Police headquarters.
In addition, IG Koome ordered an investigation into the land eviction and warned that officials found to be responsible for carrying out the demolitions without permission will be prosecuted.
The action by IG Koome comes after Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga condemned the Msambweni demolitions that has affected at least 3000 residents.
“From Mavoko to Kakamega, Thika, and Mombasa and today in Voi, the government seems to be pursuing a policy of evicting people from their settlements using utmost pain inflicted at the most desperate moments,” said Raila.
According to Raila Odinga, the dispute of the land was brought to the attention of President William Ruto who in turn asked elected leaders to come up with a resolution.

“As the community prepared to meet this afternoon, demolition started early morning. The entire leadership of the National Government Administration Officers in the county has refused to respond to distress calls of residents and instead gone into hiding,” Raila added.
Raila also noted that the community asked the government to compensate them for land acquired by the SGR, to enable them to buy alternative settlements but it has not happened.
In addition, the Azimio leader mentioned that he has taken time to speak to different categories of community leaders in Voi over the tussle.
