A Kenyatta University student has recalled how the school’s ill-fated bus crashed with a trailer on the evening of Monday, March 18 leaving 11 students dead and many others with injuries.

Speaking to the Daily Nation, a student who survived the accident recalled that the bus driver was trying to overtake on the highway when the horrific road crash happened.

“We were on a trip with our school bus. So, just after Mtito, Andei and our driver was trying to overtake. The trailer came right at us and crashed into our bus from behind. Those who were seated in the rear were the ones who were hurt so badly in the accident,” the student said.

“For us, we had our seatbelts, but we were still thrown outside. My hand was injured in the process. My friend here sustained head injuries. It was raining heavily at the time of the accident, and now I don’t even know where some of my other friends are,” he added.

The student said he became unconscious after he was thrust outside the bus, and he luckily escaped with only a hand injury.

“I do not remember much after the accident. When I regained consciousness I saw some of my friends were doing okay while others were not,” he said.

Meanwhile, seven critically injured KU students have been airlifted to Parklands Avenue Hospital in Nairobi.

Another nine other students will be airlifted to the same facility later.

The university Vice Chancellor Paul Wainanina in a statement earlier on Tuesday said some of the critically injured students will be evacuated to Nairobi after an assessment on their status.

The school bus was carrying public health students who were heading to Mombasa for an academic trip.
