Two police officers arrested for SGR vandalism in direct violation of an order by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.

Two police officers attached to the Duka Moja bridge in Narok were arrested for breaching Interior CS Kithure Kindiki’s strict orders on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) vandalism by stealing guard rails along the railway line.

CS Kindiki had issued a warning against the vice on March 11, comparing it to an act of terrorism over its potential to harm the nation’s economy and cause a large number of victims.

Less than a week after Kindiki gave the harsh orders, two Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) officers were apprehended attempting to steal the materials.

A police complaint states that while on routine patrol along the bridge, a guard officer saw two suspects damaging the railings.

The guard officer called for backup and minutes later the Officer Commanding Station (OCS)’s team arrived at the scene.

The two suspects, armed with G3 rifles, attempted to escape but were apprehended by the officers’ team.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were identified as two officers attached to the Duka Moja bridge.

The duo was placed in custody as police launched investigations into the matter.

The two G3 rifles were confiscated and transferred to Suswa Terminus Station.

The Interior CS initially warned of stern action against those caught in vandalism, noting that such actions compromised national security.

“Any person found within the vicinity of a protected facility including the railway, critical water reservoirs will be dealt with according to the protected areas act, which is the most serious and most punitive law that guards State House,” Kindiki asserted.

“Leave the railways alone, leave the critical infrastructure alone, those are national security assets they are important for the security of our nation.”
