MPs recommend disbandment of Moi University management

The National Assembly Committee on Education has proposed disbandment of Moi University management following the recent strikes and economic challenges at the institution

The National Assembly Committee on Education has proposed disbandment of Moi University management following the recent strikes and economic challenges at the institution.

While addressing university staff on Friday, November 8, the committee chair Julius Melly announced that they would be pushing for the entire overhaul of the university management.

According to Melly, the university was being mismanaged by the current administrators hence the need for a change.

The MP opined that the institution was in dire need of a fresh start given the poor state of resources and affairs.

In particular, the committee chair lamented that the institution had many outstanding loans in addition to unremitted staff deductions amounting to millions of shillings.

Consequently, he added that they would be pushing for a caretaker team to be put in place after the current administrators are sent home.

“We are 15 members in the committee and what we have seen here, we have never seen in any other university. The mismanagement and the rot at this university can never be compared to any,” he stated.

“One of the things that will be discussed is caretaker management.”

Moi University was closed last month following the strike of the staff and students.

Owing to the situation, the Ministry of Education intervened and organised for the reopening of the institution.

The reopening was set for Friday, November 8 with plans of a major stakeholder meeting scheduled.
