President William Ruto has announced plans to construct special infrastructural features along the Nairobi River amid the ongoing cleaning exercise

President William Ruto has announced plans to construct special infrastructural features along the Nairobi River amid the ongoing cleaning exercise.

As revealed by the Head of State during a meeting on Tuesday, November 12, the infrastructure will include linear markets to facilitate trade among business individuals.

Additionally, the government will be constructing non-motorised infrastructure along the river to facilitate the movement of people.

The non-motorized infrastructure includes walkways and cyclist lanes which can be used by city residents interested in running and cycling.

Further, Ruto indicated that the government was widening the river between 20 and 30 meters.

As explained by Ruto, the move is aimed at protecting the river and the rehabilitation work that is being done.

Previously, most people had encroached on the river reserve and built homes and churches along the river reserve.

“We are going to widen Nairobi River to between 20 and 30 meters in some sections. We want to build a non-motorised transport infrastructure and build linear markets along it to make it better,” he stated.

On the other hand, he committed that the government was keen on fixing the sewer system to eliminate any possibility of contamination of the water.

“The most important aspect of this is actually the sewer. We need to contain the sewer that is actually going into the river. We are going to construct 54 kilometres of sewer.” Ruto remarked.
