DCI dismisses allegations of blocking Rigathi Gachagua from attending church service in Nairobi on Sunday.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has refuted claims that it tried to block former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from attending a church function at Kahawa West in Nairobi County.

Bishop JJ Gitahi claimed that the State had attempted to block Gachagua from attending the service at Priesthood Fellowship Church on grounds that it would amount to incitement.

However, in a statement on Tuesday, November 12, DCI denied the allegations claiming that they operate within the law.

“We want to clarify that these allegations are entirely false and seem to be aimed at misrepresenting the actions and intentions of the DCI. The DCI operates within the parameters established by the rule of law and has consistently affirmed its commitment to refraining from interference in the liberties of individuals and institutions,” the agency said.

While distancing itself from the allegations, the DCI noted that the writer’s claims that they were unable to obtain a comment from the officers were incorrect.

DCI also appeared to hint that detectives were at the premises where the former Deputy President attended a church service in Kahawa West.

According to the report that appeared on Sunday, November 11, the government sought to know from Gitahi why was hosting the former Deputy President.

In its report, the local daily alleged how the founder of the church where Gachagua was to attend confirmed to the congregation that the government had tried to cancel Gachagua’s appearance, claiming that hosting him would amount to incitement and disrupt peace in the area.

According to the flagged article, the priest through a secretary-general to the board informed the publication that after the service, detectives raided the preacher’s residence in Ruiru, Kiambu County, seeking to know why he was hosting the former deputy president.

However, the bishop stood his ground, insisting that Gachagua’s presence at his church was a normal church service like any other and after a few minutes, they left.

The secretary-general to the board at the church noted that the priest had to switch vehicles because he had been informed that the detectives were trailing him.

The piece further alleged that the detectives who had unmarked Subaru cars, termed Gachagua’s presence as a breach of national security and that his presence was likely to incite the local community against the government.
