Janet Mbugua has announced her exit from Nation Media Group (NTV), stepping down from her role on the morning programme Fixing the Nation after just over a year.

The announcement came during her final segment on April 17, after hosting the show alongside Eric Latiff and Mariam Bishar.

Mbugua said she joined the show as it was a natural fit to continue her advocacy and active citizen work on a mainstream platform.

“It was coming off the back of a very intense season in the country that I had already been very vocal about. So it just felt like a natural fit to continue with that advocacy and active citizen lens and bring it onto a mainstream platform,” Mbugua said.

The show, which airs every weekday from 6am to 10am across all Nation Media Group platforms, focuses on conversations about issues affecting Kenyans, emphasising solutions, expert insights and public voices.

In her farewell statement, Mbugua described her exit as an early departure, noting that she usually commits three to seven years to a media role.

She explained that the decision was difficult but necessary, reflecting a personal and professional transition due to a shift in priorities.

Mbugua said that she will remain active on her social media platforms to continue engaging with her audience.

She also reiterated her commitment to the Inua Dada Foundation, which she founded to advance menstrual health management, protect girl child rights and fight period poverty.

Mbugua expressed gratitude to viewers for their support and the production teams she worked with during her tenure.

She also announced her replacement, Fellaris Wambui, who has been in the media space for three years and has a background of over a decade in corporate communications and brand management.

“Receive them with the openness, curiosity and engagement that you have extended to me and my co-hosts,” Mbugua said to audiences, introducing Wambui.

Speaking about taking over the program, Wambui said, “I’m stepping into very big shoes, but I have been telling myself that each of us have a part to play when it comes to fixing this nation and I’m here to do exactly that.”

She added, “It is a bittersweet entry into this. Janet, you are a woman I have really looked up to over the years.”
