The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to recognise 300 teachers from each county under the prestigious Wajibika Award.

The initiative is under the Public Service Commission (PSC). It aims to recognise teachers, administrators and schools that demonstrate high levels of transparency, integrity and accountability.

A TSC memo dated May 4, signed by Acting CEO Evaleen Mitei, outlined the eligibility criteria that teachers and schools must meet for the award.

“The Commission has adopted performance evaluation tools (Teachers Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) and Performance Contracting) alongside KCSE/KCPE mean scores as the criteria for nomination,” the memo stated.

TSC announced that 300 teachers from each county have been shortlisted, including both primary and secondary school educators who meet the commission’s performance standards.

The memo instructs regional and county directors to nominate teachers who have achieved TPAD scores of 95 per cent and above for six consecutive terms, spanning from Term 2, 2024, to Term 1, 2026.

Shortlisted teachers are also required to submit mean scores for their best-performing subjects in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) from 2023 to 2025.

For school heads to qualify for the award, they must have maintained a performance evaluation score of 90 per cent or higher over three consecutive years.

In addition, the administrators must have demonstrated financial discipline, including keeping pending bills below 5 per cent during the same period. Each county will have two secondary and two primary school heads under consideration.

Schools will be evaluated based on institutional accountability, effective resource management, structured curriculum implementation and promotion of learner safety and welfare. Each county will have one primary and one secondary school under consideration.

The Wajibika Award introduces a merit-based approach, recognising both teaching performance and leadership, while highlighting the role of educators in supporting learning and school standards.

Regional and county directors have been given until 4pm on Friday, May 8, to submit all necessary data, including teacher performance scores and information on nominated schools and heads of institutions.
