Maseno School set for Ksh 2billion redevelopment

Maseno School, one of Kenya’s oldest learning institutions, is set for a Ksh2 billion redevelopment to enhance the school’s competitiveness with its peers.
The revamp will be announced on Saturday, May 9, during the institution’s 120th birthday celebrations.
President William Ruto will be the chief guest and is expected to inspect the plan that is aimed at modernising Maseno School’s facilities and rebuilding its national academic standing.
The all-boys public boarding national school is among the 103 premier national schools. Under the current Competency-Based Education (CBE), the school is specifically categorised as a C1 school and offers a triple pathway for students, offering STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts & Sports.
Plans indicate the school revamp is anchored on three pillars of infrastructure modernisation, academic excellence and financial sustainability.
Caleb Olango, the school’s director of sports and co-curricular activities, said the redevelopment was a response to facilities that had been overtaken by time and rising student numbers.
“Maseno School has outgrown the existing facilities,” Olango said. Adding, “We shall experience improvement in terms of infrastructure and the creation of more modern playing fields.”
Officials say the school’s legacy alone can no longer sustain its competitiveness in the 21st century, drawing comparisons with peer institutions such as Mang’u High School and Alliance High School, which have invested heavily in modern laboratories, dormitories, halls and playing surfaces.
Under the academic pillar, the school is targeting a mean grade of 11.0 in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and a 100 per cent university transition rate.

The financial sustainability leg of the plan rests on the newly launched Old Boys and Friends of Maseno School Foundation, which is intended to convert alumni goodwill into a permanent funding engine for the school.
The foundation is envisioned as a long-term vehicle that will mobilise contributions and investments to fund scholarships and student welfare, reducing the school’s reliance on external cycles of funding.
“If we have the right facilities, then the young generation will benefit a great deal,” Olango said, adding that the school wanted opportunity at Maseno to be “dictated by potential rather than circumstance”.
Maseno School was founded in 1906 by missionary pioneer Reverend John Willis and sits directly on the equator, a distinction that has long featured in its identity.
The institution has produced leading professionals in Kenyan public life and athletes who have risen to national prominence.
Saturday’s celebration, themed “Perseverance Shall Win Through: 120 Years of Heritage, Leadership, and Excellence”, was originally scheduled for April but was postponed to allow for wider mobilisation of alumni and stakeholders.
