Chaos at Narok High Court as residents attempt to free murder suspect
Chaos erupted at the Narok High Court on Tuesday, June 2, as a crowd clashed with police and prison wardens while allegedly attempting to free a murder suspect.
Area residents stormed the courts following the detention of Matunke Mayone, who is facing a murder charge over a death that reportedly occurred during a land dispute in Maji Moto, Narok County.
Residents could be seen gathered around the court premises, attempting to breach the gates and interrupt proceedings.
Court operations were disrupted as police fired shots and deployed teargas to disperse rioters attempting to interfere with the suspect’s custody.
Video footage captured outside the court compound showed teargas rising into the air, with gunshots and screams audible in the background.
The footage also showed a police vehicle arriving as officers moved to restore order, with personnel deployed around the area.
The High Court has ordered that Mayone remain in custody for three days as the case will be mentioned on Thursday, June 4.

The court communicated that it is waiting to verify whether a mental assessment has been conducted before further proceedings continue.
This incident adds to a growing pattern of land disputes in Narok County that have strained relationships among residents in local communities.
Tensions in Maji Moto recently prompted Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia to intervene and address residents, seeking to calm fears arising from a protracted land dispute.
In 2025, a 6,500-acre parcel of land in Ang’ata Barikoi, Kilgoris, became the focus of a heated dispute amid allegations of irregular land transactions and fears that portions of the land might be taken from the local community.
The unrest prompted the government to designate Maji Moto as one of the security-disturbed areas in Narok County for 30 days, following a series of violent clashes.
