South Sudanese national allegedly abducted in Nairobi
A South Sudanese businessman has gone missing in Nairobi, with reports indicating that he was allegedly abducted by armed men around 3am on Wednesday, June 10, raising fears of a possible forced return to South Sudan.
The case has drawn concern from human rights organisations, including Amnesty International Kenya, which released a statement calling for the immediate disclosure of his whereabouts, access to family and lawyers, and a transparent investigation.
The rights group warned that the situation indicates an enforced disappearance and urged authorities to ensure due process.
“If Mr Gaddhaffy-Dit is suspected of any offense, the only lawful course of action is to proceed through Kenya’s justice system, not through abduction, incommunicado detention, and deportation,” the statement read.
Activist Boniface Mwangi also commented on the disappearance, saying the businessman had previously raised fears for his safety during a meeting in April, citing alleged threats linked to business disputes and financial investigations.
The last person to hear from Athorbey Gaddafi Guet, widely known as Gaddafi, was his wife, who said they last spoke on Monday, June 8, at about 10:19am, after which he failed to return home and later became unreachable as his phones went off.
She said efforts to trace his phone placed its last known location near a hospital along Kiambu Road, prompting her to search the facility to no avail.

A relative then informed her that a report had been filed at Kilimani Police Station, which indicated that Gaddafi may have been taken at gunpoint in what is being treated as an abduction.
According to the police report, the businessman was allegedly intercepted while travelling in a rideshare vehicle in Nairobi after leaving Lucky 8 Casino near Yaya Centre.
The report claims the vehicle was blocked by a white pickup carrying masked men, who then bundled him into the car.
Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are reportedly investigating the incident, though they have not issued an official statement.
This incident adds to multiple cases documented by human rights organisations and United Nations investigators over the past decade involving South Sudanese activists, opposition figures and government critics who were allegedly deported, abducted or forcibly returned from Kenya.
Edmond Yakani, a civil society activist from South Sudan, has condemned the reported abduction, calling on Kenyan authorities to ensure the safety and protection of South Sudanese nationals living in the country.
