Central MP warns against plans to weaken Kindiki’s position
Igembe Central Member of Parliament Daniel Kiili has said Meru residents are focused on development and do not support calls for “one-term” politics even as some leaders push the rhetoric to weaken Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s position.
Speaking during the 60th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service at Burieruri High School in Meru County on Sunday, June 28, 2026, the legislator said the region’s priority is development under President William Ruto’s administration.
Addressing the congregation, Kiili criticized political campaigns he described as divisive and said residents were more interested in development than political slogans.
“Hapa kuna viherehere, hapa wamekua wakipiga kelele na wanazunguka hapa na fitina na hakuna maendeleo. Sisi hapa hatutaki story na one term, hapa tunataka story ya maendeleo na ya President Ruto,” Kiili said.
The MP also defended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, warning against political efforts he said were aimed at weakening his position.
“Na wenye wanajaribu kuvunja ngazi ya Kithure Kindiki, tutawangoa kabla hawajangoa Kindiki.”
Other Meru leaders rallied behind Kindiki, endorsing him as President William Ruto’s successor in 2032.
Kiili’s remarks also echo recent statements by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku on support for President Ruto and Deputy President Kindiki in Meru.
Speaking during a television interview on June 15, 2026, Ruku said the region would back the Kenya Kwanza leadership in the next election.
“Wananchi wa kona hii si wajinga. 70 per cent ya watu wa Meru wataamka asubuhi waseme mtoto yao ni Kindiki, rais wao ni William Ruto, na wapigie William Ruto kura turudi,” he said.

Ruku also defended Kindiki’s position as deputy president and said discussions about the country’s future leadership should be left to the electorate.
His remarks come as political activity continues to intensify in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the next general election.
Kiili’s comments follow recent visits to Meru by opposition leaders seeking support in the vote-rich region.
Earlier in June 2026, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i toured Meru County during a three-day visit hosted by Party of National Unity leader Peter Munya.
During the tour, Matiang’i attended church services and met residents as part of his engagements in the region.
The opposition has continued to hold meetings across different parts of the country as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Meru remains one of the key battlegrounds expected to shape the outcome of the presidential contest.
