A double tragedy has hit a family of one of the victims in the Utumishi Academy fire incident after the mother was killed in a road accident.

According to a police report, the victim, a mother of one of the students involved in the Utumishi fire tragedy, lost her life in a road accident on the Gilgil-Nakuru highway.

The accident occured as the family was rushing to the school together with her husband immediately after receiving the news of the tragedy that had just hit their daughter’s school.

The student’s mother died on the spot after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed at the Kariandusi area.

The husband narrowly escaped death but sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Whilst their daughter did not die in the fire incident, she escaped with injuries and is currently under medication.

The Utumishi fire incident left 16 students dead and 79 injured, according to records by the Ministry of Education.

The fire broke out early Thursday morning as students were deep asleep in one of the dormitories. According to parents who visited the school, the students were unable to access the emergency door after it was allegedly locked.

According to one parent, students who were trapped in the upper section of the dormitory were forced to jump to the ground to escape the flames, with several sustaining critical injuries.

“Those who were on the upper part of the dorm, some jumped to the ground and sustained serious injuries, and that is why you hear that some are nursing critical injuries and are in the hospital,” a parent stated to the media.

Part of the reason the fire claimed so many lives, according to the latest reports, was partly due to the fact that the dormitory was locked from the inside.

Seven injured students from the tragedy have since been airlifted to Nairobi for further medical attention, while 61 others have been treated and discharged.

Following the incident, Education CS Julius Ogamba announced the closure of the institution, ordering parents to collect their students from the facility even as investigations into the tragedy continue.
