Government kicks off recruitment drive for Kenyans seeking jobs abroad

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has announced the commencement of a nationwide recruitment exercise for Kenyans seeking jobs abroad

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has announced the commencement of a nationwide recruitment exercise for Kenyans seeking jobs abroad.

In a statement on Friday, November 15, the CS said the program will kick off on Wednesday, November 20, and will cover all 47 counties.

Mutua said the Ministry of Labour will work with select government institutions and licensed recruitment agencies to reach as many Kenyans as possible.

“To ensure this recruitment drive is accessible to all, we are working closely with the National Employment Authority (NEA), the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), and licensed recruitment agencies.

Recruitment activities will take place at county headquarters and TVET institutions. To further streamline the process, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) will be on-site to facilitate fingerprinting for certificates of good conduct, while immigration officials will assist with preliminary passport applications,” he said.

Mutua mentioned that interested job seekers can participate in the program by bringing their ID cards and relevant qualification documents.

Additionally, the CS noted that it is important for interested parties to apply for certificates of good conduct and ensure that passport application requirements are completed in advance.

“Together with a dedicated team of recruitment agencies, I will be visiting every county to ensure as many Kenyans as possible benefit from this initiative. This program is a significant step towards empowering our people and boosting their livelihoods through meaningful employment opportunities abroad,” he said.

Mutua explained that the new program builds on the success of the recently completed recruitment drive for jobs in Qatar.

He said 3,247 Kenyans had been selected for the jobs, with the Qatar company expected to conduct another recruitment exercise to fill the 8,000 available positions.

“During the first phase of the Qatar initiative, 3,247 Kenyans were selected out of the 8,000 available positions. I am pleased to report that nearly 1,500 of them have already received their offer letters and are finalizing their travel documentation. We expect all successful candidates to depart in the coming weeks to begin their careers. The Qatari company responsible for these positions will return soon to complete recruitment for the remaining 5,000 slots,” Mutua said.

This program is part of the government’s plan to address unemployment by exporting workers abroad on a large scale.

The target is to send between 5,000 to 10,000 Kenyan workers abroad weekly, contributing to a broader goal of exporting one million workers annually.

“We want to send 3,000 or 5,000 Kenyans abroad weekly. This way, they’ll be able to send money home, be able to depend on themselves and also contribute towards the betterment of the country,” President William Ruto said in November 2023.
