Government starts integration of 700,000 refugees in Kenyan communities

The government on Thursday commenced the process of integrating over 700,000 refugees from Kakuma and Dadaab camps with neighbouring Kenyan communities

The government on Thursday commenced the process of integrating over 700,000 refugees from Kakuma and Dadaab camps with neighbouring Kenyan communities.

The decision to integrate the refugees was reached during a meeting with members of the Senate and National Assembly from both Turkana and Garissa counties.

During the meeting, the legislators deliberated on how to conceptualize and implement the Shirika Plan.

A plan that seeks to transform refugee camps into integrated settlements.

The meeting convened by the Directorate of Refugees was centred on modalities of the proposed social-economic integration of the refugees living in the two camps.

“We had an insightful Day One of discussions with the National Assembly and the senate MPs from Turkana and Garissa counties on the conceptualization and implementation of the Shirika Plan,” the directorate of refugees noted in a statement.

“The retreat convened to discuss the proposed social-economic integration of over 700,000 refugees in Kakuma and Dadaab camps with host communities.”

The dialogue which has been going on for years between the Kenyan government and the United Nations Agency for Refugees reached its implementation stage on Thursday.

According to the United Nations, transitioning refugees into integrated settlements is aimed at promoting the socio-economic inclusion of refugees and bringing additional support to other Kenyan communities.

Kenya remains the fifth largest refugee hosting country in the continent and the thirteenth largest asylum country in the world.

During a past meeting held to deliberate refugees’ integration, the government committed to creating an environment that would support the socioeconomic inclusion of refugees and build opportunities for them.

“The Plan is being prepared using a multi-stakeholder consultative approach and is based on the integrated area-based settlement plans supporting the local economic development,” read part of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) statement.

“A Steering Committee and a multi-stakeholder Technical Committee will guide the Shirika Plan Secretariat that has been formed to lead the development of the Plan.”
