Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has resigned, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed
Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has resigned, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed.
Speaking on Wednesday, December 11, newly elected FKF President Hussein Mohamed stated that Firat terminated his contract through a notice to the federation.
“I would like to point out that the national coach terminated his contract through a notice that was issued at the beginning of this week and it was important for us to inform Kenyans that as we speak today he opted to dominate his contract with the federation,” he said in a presser.
On the way forward and whether the next coach will be a local or a foreigner, Mohamed maintained that the recruitment will be done based on merit.
“If you are to ask me, it will be purely on merit. The person has to have the credentials and I think it will be performance-based as well,” he added.
“Whether the coach will be local or foreign, that will be the determination of the team that will be set up to undertake this process of acquisition.”
Firat, a Turkish football manager, served as the head coach of Kenya’s national team, Harambee Stars, from September 2021 until his resignation.

His tenure included 23 matches, resulting in 7 wins, 7 draws, and 9 losses, reflecting a win percentage of approximately 30.4%.
Despite facing challenges such as unpaid wages and public pressure due to poor team performance, Firat remained committed to developing local football.
“As a coach, sometimes you choose your options based on what suits you best. Like you go for the money, or you can go maybe where you feel more comfortable. Or you look for a challenge,” he said.
He previously achieved success in various international coaching roles, including winning the Iran Pro League with Saipa.
