Headteacher arrested for ‘hiring Standard Two pupil as househelp
Headteacher has been arrested for ‘hiring Standard Two pupil as househelp in Homabay County.
The primary school headteacher was arrested after he reportedly hired an underage girl as a househelp hence denying her an opportunity to attend school.
In May of last year, the nine-year-old is believed to have dropped out of school in Migori County.
She was in Standard Two at the time.
She is believed to have been given the responsibility of caring after the teachers’ one-year-old child.
The headteacher, who resides in Rodi Kopany Township, is accused of forcing the girl to stay at his residence instead of going to school.
Neighbors were concerned about the girl’s absence from school, so he was arrested.
The matter was reported to Homa Bay sub-county children’s officer Joseph Otieno by some of the neighbors.
According to Otieno, he coordinated with Rodi Police Station officers and raided the house.
The officers arrested the headteacher after establishing he had turned the girl into a house help.
“It is true the man has been exposing the girl to child labour,” Otieno said.
The school head has been detained at Rodi Police Station.
