ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan suspended over sexual abuse allegations
The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan has been suspended by a key governing body of the court, as he continues to face sexual abuse allegations from a member of his office.
The 21-member bureau of the Assembly of States Parties made the decision on Monday, 8th June, voting by qualified majority to suspend Khan from duty with immediate effect, pending a final decision by the full Assembly of States Parties, the body that represents every ICC member country.
A special session of the ASP will be convened as soon as possible to deliberate on the matter.
“The bureau emphasizes that this suspension is not an indication of the final outcome,” the body said in a statement.

The suspension will have little immediate practical impact on the court’s day-to-day operations. Khan, a 55-year-old British national, had already stepped aside in May 2025, taking a leave of absence to contest the allegations, which he denies.
He had also previously been removed from proceedings in the ICC’s most high-profile current case involving former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte.
Khan rose to global prominence after successfully applying for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in connection with the war in Gaza.
This move drew significant international attention and made him one of the first individuals to be sanctioned by the United States, which expressed strong objections to the warrants on behalf of its ally Israel.
