Ida Odinga dismisses calls to join politics ahead of 2027 elections

Ida Odinga has dismissed calls for her to join politics ahead of the 2027 General Election, maintaining that her current role lies outside the political arena.

Addressing the press on Monday, April 13, amid speculation about her possible political ambitions, Ida emphasised that she has no intention of vying for any elective seat in Kenya.

The Kenyan Ambassador and Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme maintained that politics has long been the domain of other members of her family, and not her.

Ida made it clear that her recent silence in public and political matters was mainly due to a period of mourning following the death of her husband, Raila Odinga and not about realining her self for politics.

“Just as we said, I have been silent for some time. When I lost my husband, Honourable Raila Odinga, I was still in the state of mourning, which was very important to me,” Ida maintained.

“Therefore, I was not able to come out and participate in any political arrangement that you people are talking about,” she added.

While reiterating her stance, Ida described herself as an industrialist rather than a politician, insisting on maintaining her professional identity compared to her family members.

She pointed out that while her late husband, Raila Odinga, daughter Winnie Odinga, and brother-in-law Oburu Oginga have all been active in politics, she has chosen a different path.

“Personally, I am not a politician. My husband was, my daughter is; my brother-in-law is also a politician; people around me are, but I am an industrialist and not a politician,” she said.

Despite her influential position, Ida Odinga maintained that she will continue to serve in her current diplomatic capacity, leaving politics to those within her family who are already actively engaged in it.

Her remarks come on the back of rigorous political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with several members of the Odinga family declaring their political ambitions.

Among those leading the course is Raila’s elder daughter Winnie Odinga, who has ramped up her involvement in politics, positioning herself for a higher role within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
