Though it was a posthumous honor, world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum was recognized for his 2023 sporting achievements.
Kiptum and double world record holder Faith Kipyegon were on Friday, March 1 night, crowned the 2023 Kenya’s best during the 20th Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) Gala held at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
The late athlete adds the annual award to a list of accolades that include Male World Athlete of the Year for out-of-stadia events.
Kiptum broke the marathon world record in October, winning the Chicago Marathon in two hours and 35 seconds.
Kiptum also rewrote history when he broke the course record for the London Marathon in April, winning in 1:01:25.
Kipyegon also continued her impressive season that saw her voted Female World Athlete of the Year in Track Events following a great season.

The 29-year-old athlete won a double at the World Athletics Championships in August, just a month after breaking world records in the 1,500m, 5,000m, and one-mile races.
On a night clouded by Kiptum’s death, Sports CS Ababu Namwamba paused before he announced the late star as the winner in the men’s category, which included Daniel Simu and Emmanuel Wanyonyi.
The CS lamented that it would have been a great moment had Kiptum been around to receive his award.
“This is a difficult one. How I wish he was here to pick this accolade himself,” Namwamba stated.
Former world marathon record holder Patrick Makau picked the accolade from Namwamba on behalf of Kiptum’s family.
