Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni has dismissed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s newly unveiled Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), vowing that Jubilee will rally behind former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i in the upcoming 2027 presidential contest.

Speaking at a youth engagement forum in Naivasha on May 16, 2025, Kioni poured scorn on Gachagua’s attempts to realign the Mt Kenya vote, describing DCP as a village project that cannot match Jubilee’s national stature.

“If you feel like you’re a national leader, Jubilee is your home. But if you want village politics, you can go with the others,” he said, in a veiled swipe at Gachagua.

Kioni also confirmed that Matiang’i has expressed interest in the presidency, asserting that Kenyans already view him as their preferred candidate.

“We toured around, and people asked, ‘Where is Matiang’i to declare if he wants the seat?’ Has he spoken? Yes, he has spoken. Have you heard him?” he posed.

He credited Matiang’i’s rising popularity to his past performance in government, suggesting that if former President Uhuru Kenyatta hadn’t given him a chance, the country wouldn’t know his capabilities.

“Whenever I mention Matiang’i, some people get uncomfortable. But it is not me — it is Kenyans. They have said clearly that Matiang’i is their president. We don’t care about his tribe or background. We care about leadership,” Kioni stated.

According to Kioni, Jubilee will field candidates in every elective seat across the country, from MCA to the presidency, affirming that the focus now must be on safeguarding the 2027 vote.

“Kenya has spoken — Ruto must go. What remains is to protect the vote,” Kioni told the charged crowd.

“We did it in 2002 with Moi, and we will do it again. Your job from today until August 8, 2027, is to guard your vote. Make sure you have your ID, register to vote, and stand firm,” he urged.

The veteran politician rallied young people to take up leadership positions in the upcoming polls, promising that Jubilee will waive nomination fees for Gen Z aspirants and conduct free and fair party primaries.

“I will ask the party leader to agree that we remove nomination fees for Gen Z. There are places where you must go with Ksh500,000. We do not want to block young people from leadership,” he added.

Kioni further took aim at Ruto’s intentions regarding the ongoing reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), alleging that Ruto fears a free and fair election and is seeking to manipulate the process.

“As we fight for IEBC commissioners, remember William Ruto does not want a commission,” Kioni stated.

“Even if he makes himself chairman of IEBC, he’s going home. He doesn’t want a commission because he knows the people have decided,” he added.

Despite the scepticism surrounding the elections, he warned that they would be intensely contested and urged young leaders not to rely on handouts or political favours.

“This is a fight. Nobody will carry you. If you want to lead, come out and fight for your space,” he said.

“Without you young people, we don’t have a country,” he added.
