The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is calling on recent Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education graduates to apply for placement in 126 courses across its national network of campuses, with applications open through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) until May 6.

Dr Kelly Oluoch, KMTC’s chief executive officer, in a statement to the media on April 30, said the college’s expanded course catalogue and pathways for students with varied KCSE grades reflect a deliberate strategy to widen access to medical training while strengthening graduate employability at home and abroad.

“We have a range that allows a student with a C- or a C to apply for either a certificate course, a diploma course, a higher diploma course or an upgrading course,” Oluoch said. The 126 programs span short courses, certificates, diplomas and higher diplomas across multiple faculties.

KMTC has courses under several faculties, like the Clinical Sciences faculty, which offers training in clinical medicine, emergency medical technicians and orthopaedic trauma medicine.

At the same time, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences runs pharmacy courses at diploma and higher diploma levels.

Other faculties include Public Health Sciences, which trains personnel to prevent disease outbreaks, and the Information Technology and Medical Education faculty, which prepares students in medical records management.

The Diagnostic Sciences faculty covers medical laboratory sciences, medical imaging sciences and optometry.

The Nursing Sciences faculty enrols the largest number of KMTC students and offers certificate, diploma and higher diploma qualifications.

Oluoch said demand for KMTC graduates is strong in both domestic and international job markets. “Demand is not only for the local market but also for the international market. In the local market, KMTC contributes over 85% of the middle-level health workforce of the country,” he said.

According to Olouch, the college’s international footprint has grown sharply. Last year, KMTC processed 4,084 graduates for external markets, including 84 occupational therapy and physiotherapy graduates placed in Germany.

To prepare students for overseas postings, the college offers training in French, German, Arabic and Amharic, alongside coursework in medical entrepreneurship.

In order to ease entry into the United States and Canadian nursing markets, KMTC has negotiated local access to the NCLEX-RN licensure examination.

“We have negotiated for examinations that allow our students to get into foreign markets like the U.S. and Canada, which is through the NCLEX-RN examination centre that is now here in Nairobi,” Oluoch said.

Oluoch said KMTC has structured its programmes for speed and labour-market relevance.

The CEO also pointed to qualifications reforms aimed at boosting graduate mobility.

KMTC is asking students interested in applying to do so through the KUCCPS portal or visit any of its 92 campuses before the May 6 deadline.
