TSC activates IVF treatment cover for teachers under SHA Mwalimu Scheme
The Teachers’ Service Commission has added access to In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment to all teachers enrolled under the Social Health Authority (SHA) Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover.
In a notice on Thursday, April 30, TSC announced that the teachers will now have access to the service as part of the ongoing efforts to improve the cover that has had teachers up in arms over the last few months.
According to the commission, IVF services have now been formally activated under the SHA. They are currently available at the Nairobi West Hospital, which is an accredited facility under the programme.
“The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is pleased to inform all eligible members that the Social Health Authority (SHA) has formally activated In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) services under the SHA Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover,” TSC stated in a statement.
“This benefit is now accessible at The Nairobi West Hospital, a contracted and accredited healthcare provider under the scheme, with immediate effect,” it added, stating that the activation began on April 24.
The commission noted that the move follows SHA’s recognition of infertility as a medically acknowledged condition with far-reaching physical, emotional, and social effects, with TSC stating that the move is to provide safe and quality care to all affected members and their families.

“SHA recognises infertility as a medically recognised condition with significant physical, emotional, and social effects. This benefit is designed to provide safe, quality care to affected members and their families.”
According to the notice, eligible beneficiaries include the principal TSC member and their lawfully declared spouse.
To qualify, TSC said couples must present documented proof of failure to conceive after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse or obtain confirmation from a qualified medical specialist.
Additionally, the female partner must be aged 41 years or below at the start of the treatment cycle.
The commission further states that both primary and secondary infertility cases are eligible. But, for secondary infertility, the couple must not have a living child at the time of seeking treatment.
The notice further clarifies that the benefit comes with a lifeline limit of two IVF attempts per beneficiary, where the cost of treatment will be covered under the Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover.
This means that in cases where a treatment cycle is cancelled or unsuccessful, including failed fertilisation, absence of viable embryos, or failed implantation, the costs incurred up to that point will still be deducted from the member’s inpatient cover.
