Massive explosion hits Ngara Estate in the capital Nairobi

A huge explosion rocked Ngara estate in Nairobi on Sunday morning, September 1, after a gas facility in the area caught fire.

In photos and videos shared in social media, a huge fire engulfed the facility, accompanied by a series of loud explosions.

A section of residents in the area, awakened by the dawn explosion, kept their distance after rushing into the streets, where some were heard screaming.

Emergency response teams were later deployed to the scene, with fire engines and ambulances positioned nearby.

A witness confirmed that an ambulance was spotted at the scene of the incident on the morning of Sunday at around 7:30pm.

Initial video clips of the incident showed an outbreak of the flames, reportedly connected to a gas station operating in the area.

At the time of publishing this article, no fatalities had been reported following the explosion, and the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.

The incident comes months after another gas explosion in the Mradi area of Embakasi, Nairobi, where six people were killed and more than 270 others seriously injured.  

The gas explosion occurred when a truck carrying gas ignited, triggering a massive fire that rapidly spread to the surrounding areas.

Several vehicles that were parked nearby and multiple businesses were destroyed in the intense inferno.

In response to the incident, President William Ruto ordered the arrest and prosecution of government officials connected to the tragedy.

Additionally, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja ordered an immediate crackdown on gas plants operating in residential areas.
