Nandi County Assembly headquarters were on Wednesday night, November 13, treated to a long night drama as residents thronged the venue, staging a night vigil while calling for the impeachment of their governor.
The residents who were engaged in running battles with the police vowed to stay put until Governor Stephen Sang, who has been under intense pressure, is impeached.
The residents who sang triumphant songs over the financial mismanagement and corruption allegations against Sang remained unfazed as police threw teargas canisters at them. They demanded to be given video access to see how MCAs would handle the impeachment issue.
This happened as the MCAs engaged in chaotic battles inside the chambers over the decision to impeach Governor Sang over claims of gross misconduct while at the helm of the county affairs.
MCAs engaged in long-night drama that included jumping over the chamber’s chairs and throwing shoes and objects at each other as others shouted.
The Serjeant-at-arms at the County Assembly struggled to contain the rioting MCAs, with some descending to trade blows within the chambers as they fought over the Mace.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei condemned the police over the handling of the protests, revealing that it was a blatant disregard of the law.
The Senator who is a fierce critic of the governor, vowed to take up the issue of alleged police conduct with the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja.

”The police have started rioting by throwing teargas at the peaceful public who are currently following the debate at Kapsabet County Assembly grounds,’’ Cherargei stated.
”I thank the people of Nandi County for being peaceful despite this unnecessary provocation by the police. I am taking up with the IG Kanja on this blatant violation of Article 37 of the Constitution of Kenya,’’ he declared.
Governor Sang’s tenure at Nandi County has been marred with drama, controversies, and impeachment calls from the residents and a section of the leaders.
On September 24, this year, residents stormed the County Assembly demanding the impeachment of Sang whom they accuse of underperforming, failing to deliver development, and presiding over the hiring of ghost workers.
Members of the County Assembly were forced to flee the chambers upon learning that a furious crowd of residents were marching towards the Assembly.
