A 60-seater Modern Coast bus on Saturday, December 7, caught fire near the Gilgil Weigh Bridge along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway

A 60-seater Modern Coast bus on Saturday, December 7, caught fire near the Gilgil Weigh Bridge along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

There was a moment of scare on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Saturday morning, December 7, after a Modern Coast bus caught fire mid-journey.

The incident occurred on the Gilgil weighbridge.

The passenger bus was captured in amateur videos burning from its rear; a huge ball of fire was seen eating up the vehicle.

The cause was yet to be established at the time of this publication.

All the passengers were safely evacuated, but their luggage was reduced to ashes.

They were spotted on the side watching helplessly as the fire consumed the bus, and they were only left with the option to film the scene.

The wreckage blocked the left lane of the highway, inconveniencing other motorists who were forced to manoeuvre off the road past the scene to avoid collision(s) from the oncoming lane.

Sources indicated that a firefighting engine from the Nakuru County Government showed up at the scene with other responders.

This would not be the first instance in which a passenger bus bursts into flames mid-journey.

Months back, an ENA Coach bus ferrying 48 passengers was reduced to ashes after it caught fire while in transit.

The bus heading to Migori caught fire at the Nairegie Enkare area along the Narok-Mai Mahiu Highway in Narok County.

The incident is said to have happened around 2:50 am.

ENA Coach in a statement said the bus’ front tyre got punctured while ascending a hill Suswa.

“Our experienced driver promptly stopped the bus to assess the situation only to discover that it had caught fire. Our crewmembers acted quickly and efficiently ensuring the safe evacuation of all passengers,” a Statement by ENA’s Chief Executive Officer Richard Mogire read in part.

“We are relieved to inform you that no causality or injuries were reported during the incident.”

The passengers were transferred to a rescue bus which was deployed to save the situation and enable travellers to reach their destination without further delays.
