Mt Kenya governor pleads with Ruto to bring back Linda Mama program initiated by Margaret Kenyatta
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire pleads with President William Ruto to bring back the Linda Mama program, initiated by Margaret Kenyatta.
The governor stated in her remarks on Friday during Embu’s celebration of International Women’s Day that one of the practical necessities that women must have is healthcare.
It is one of the things, according to her, that makes life and work easier for women in the rural.
This she said includes energy-saving cooking stoves and affordable gas cookers, as well as tapped clean water in their homes.
“We need certain things to make our work easier. Practical gender needs, like energy-saving jikos, or affordable gas,” she said.
“Mama anahitaji maji ifike kwake asiharibu saa kuenda mtoni. Mama anahita hospitali akienda kuzaa. Tafadhali linda mama program iendelee,” Mbarire said.
She appreciated President William Ruto for supporting women’s programs in the country.
“Your Excellency, thank you for seeing the effort of the women of Kenya and finding it necessary to support programs for women.”
The Embu Governor’s request comes after in January last year, NHIF was forced to dismiss reports that the government-funded Linda Mama programme had been discontinued.

This was after rumours that the programme was among those that the Kenya Kwanza government had done away with.
The fund assured that it is still active and continues to take care of the welfare of mothers as intended.
“NHIF wishes to assure the public that the cover is still active as mothers continue to benefit massively. The fund therefore urges the public to ignore the false message shared online,” NHIF said.
Linda Mama was a free maternity project launched by Former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta in 2016.
The programme, which was the brainchild of former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and aimed at providing support to expectant mothers and infants under the Universal Health Care (UHC) system
It was a publicly funded healthcare scheme for free maternity services.
