Mt Kenya MPs set to abandon President Ruto; Gachagua’s ally

Mt Kenya MPs set to abandon President Ruto; Gachagua's ally

Senator Karungo Thang'wa says Mt Kenya MPs will abandon President Ruto after IEBC reconstitution

Senator Karungo Thang’wa says Mt Kenya MPs will abandon President Ruto after IEBC reconstitution.

Kiambu senator Karungo Thang’wa predicts a massive departure of elected lawmakers from President William Ruto’s fold.

The senator suggested that MPs from Mt Kenya were in their Damascus Moments and would soon see the light out of the president’s camp.

He further hinted that another political outfit was being devised by deposed deputy president Rigathi Gachagua to replace the ruling party.

Thang’wa foresaw an event in which those elected under UDA would resign en masse and seek fresh mandate under the new outfit that he said would be all-inclusive and sensitive to the people’s needs. This would, however, be dependent on the state of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“Anyone ignoring Mt Kenya with its electorate is ignorant…if the president believes in himself, let him reconstitute the IEBC. He will see many MPs resigning from UDA and seek fresh mandate using a different party that listens to the public,” said Thang’wa.

Thang’wa is among the lawmakers who have vowed to abandon Ruto’s fold to stick with the former deputy president. Who does Gachagua want to team up with?

The senator’s pronouncements came days after Gachagua gave the clearest hint that he would team up with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the 2027 General Election.

During an interview on NTV, Gachagua described Kalonzo and his DAP-K counterpart Eugene Wamalwa as great leaders. According to the former deputy president, there is nothing wrong with partnering with great leaders to help the country.

While maintaining that he has not entered into any agreement with the particular leaders, the former deputy president stated that he has been in contact with like-minded leaders.

Gachagua pointed out that Mt Kenya residents were happy with Kalonzo’s stand during his impeachment proceedings.

The former deputy president hinted that he would give the Mt Kenya region political directions by February 2025.
