Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo got some relief after Members of the County Assembly took a vote on his impeachment motion.
During a voting exercise at the county assembly on Tuesday, September 17, 22 MCAs voted in favour of Nyaribo’s impeachment.
However, the ward representatives in support of Nyaribo’s ouster were shy of one vote to effect the impeachment. Notably, Nyaribo got the support of 12 MCAs.
The governor had been accused of abuse of office, gross misconduct and contravening the law.
“The threshold needed to impeach the governor stands at 22.6, which is 23 and so the governor survives,” Speaker Enock Okero announced after the vote.

This is the second time that the governor has survived an impeachment motion. The first motion was tabled in 2023.
At the time, Nyaribo had been accused of nepotism and hiring staff irregularly in the county government.
On his part, the governor claimed that the impeachment motion was a witch hunt, adding that some of his opponents in the 2022 elections were behind the move.
“There was a lot of external influence and we have evidence from people I beat in the gubernatorial contest, an MP and an aspiring governor. Six people raised money to persuade MCAs to start the impeachment process,” he stated then.
