Shock as athlete collapses and dies after a meal at hotel in Elgeyo Marakwet
A junior athlete has collapsed and died at a hotel in the Kaptagat area of Elgeyo Marakwet County.
According to the County Police Commander Peter Mulinge, Willy Chelewa aged 28, died after taking a meal at the hotel where he had been living while training.
The athlete participated in the recent Nairobi City Marathon half marathon and had secured a Chinese sponsor for international races.

He finished the race in a time of 65 minutes, 30 seconds at position 67.
The athlete had taken black tea and rice before he collapsed and died.
Police are currently at the hotel investigating the incident and have collected samples of the meals he took before collapsing.
Mulinge says the hotel management reported the matter to the police, who rushed to the scene.
The athlete has been using the hotel room as his base as he trains with his colleagues in the area, which has many training camps.
