Police officer swept away by floods while on rescue mission

A police officer attached to the Kamukunji Police Station was swept away by floods on Sunday night while rescuing pedestrians

A police officer attached to the Kamukunji Police Station was swept away by floods on Sunday night while rescuing pedestrians.

According to a police report, the officer had rescued four people, three women and a child from their business stalls.

The four were trapped between a slab connecting their stalls and the pedestrian walkway. However, after the officer successfully rescued them, he walked back to aid in locking the stalls.

However, the report details that the slab caved in, and a s a result, the police officer was swept away by the raging waters.

“ After the successful rescue, the officer who was deployed together with them went back to assist in locking the stalls when suddenly the remaining holding slab caved in”, read the report in part.

The report also explains that the officer’s rifle (AK47) was also swept away by the floods while it was loaded with ammunition.

“As a result, the officer was swept away by the raging waters together with his rifle AK 47 serial Number loaded with 30 RDS of 7.62*39mm special,” stated the report.

Police Boss Adamson Bungei confirmed the incident to the media stating that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

However, the body of the police officer and his rifle are yet to be found.

In separate incidents across the city, three other people lost their lives as a result of the floods from the heavy downpour from different areas of Nairobi.

Two of those who lost their lives were boda boda riders in the Eastlands area.

Additionally, the heavy downpour that was experienced in the city on Sunday night has resulted in heavy traffic snarl-ups that were witnessed along major roads.

Mostly affected were Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, Lang’ata Road and the Nairobi CBD.

Additionally, the Kenya Railways service also confirmed disruption of its services in the city owing to the incident.
