President William Ruto has assured a thorough investigation into the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

The lawmaker serving his second term was shot dead on Nairobi’s Ngong Road on the evening of April 30.

His death sparked questions, with speculation going rife about the motive behind it.

Addressing mourners at the deceased lawmaker’s native home in Kasipul on Saturday, May 3, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma petitioned the government to get to the bottom of the matter soon, or else the partnership between the ODM and UDA parties would be revised.

The foregoing position was underscored by Homa Bay governor Gladys Wanga, who explained that the recent partnership between ODM leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto did not mean that injustices be perpetrated against leaders from Nyanza.

Seeming to speak to the concerns, the president said the state was on course to identify and bring the killers to justice.

Speaking during a church function in Migori on Sunday, May 4, Ruto condemned the killing of Were, saying his administration will not condone lawlessness and violence.

“I have told everyone that the government will strive to protect the property and life of every citizen. Recently, we lost one of our MPs, Ong’ondo Were of Kasipul. I want to assure the Homa Bay and Kasipul constituents that those behind the murder will be pursued. We will get them; they will not succeed; they will not have anywhere to hide. We will go after them and their collaborators and see that such an act does not recur in our country,” Ruto said.

In the meantime, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced on Sunday, May 4, that its detectives had arrested a suspect linked to Were’s fatal gun attack.

The sleuths also recovered a car that the suspect and his accomplices used to escape from the scene after gunning down Were.

The vehicle is reported to have been captured by security cameras near Parliament Building, City Hall Way, Wabera Street, Kenyatta Avenue, Jakaya Kikwete Road, Argwings Kodhek Road, and Valley Road, the same routes Were used before being killed.

The suspect in custody was also traced along all the routes the late MP used before he was shot.

He is expected to aid in the ongoing investigations.
