Ruto bids farewell to Former U.S. Ambassador Meg Whitman

President William Ruto has officially bid farewell to outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman

President William Ruto has officially bid farewell to outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman.

Former United States Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman on Tuesday, November 19, met with President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi.

The former Ambassador met Ruto to bid him farewell barely a week after announcing that she would be stepping down from her position.

Whitman and her team held talks with Ruto moments before he escorted her to a waiting vehicle which drove her away.

On Wednesday, November 13, Whitman issued a statement announcing that she had tendered her resignation to President Joe Biden.

She noted that she had also informed her colleagues at the US Embassy of her decision to leave her role.

“Today, I announced to my team at the U.S. embassy that I submitted my resignation to President Biden. It has been an honour and privilege to serve the American people through strengthening our partnership with Kenya.

“I am proud of leading a people-centred agenda that saves lives, increases security, and creates economic opportunities for Kenyans and Americans. From delivering emergency funding to alleviate catastrophic flooding in 2023 to the ongoing fight against malaria, HIV, and MPOX, the US government prioritizes the health and welfare of our friends in Kenya,” read the statement in part.

Following her departure, Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard will be leading the team at the Embassy until her position is filled.

Following Donald Trump’s win, the hashtag #ResignMegWhitman trended on X as Kenyans expressed their anticipation of Whitman’s likely recall next year under the new Trump administration.

The reaction stems from criticism Whitman has faced recently for her alleged “meddling” in Kenya’s affairs and her strong support of Ruto.

Whitman was appointed as the US Ambassador to Kenya in 2022 following her nomination for the position by Biden in December 2021, and the US Senate confirmation of the nomination on July 14, 2022.
