Students flee after fire guts dormitory at Molo Seminary School

A dormitory at St Joseph’s Seminary School in Molo, Nakuru County, caught fire on Saturday night, just three days after a deadly blaze at Utumishi Girls’ High School in Gilgil claimed the lives of 16 students in the same county.

According to reports, the fire broke out at around 10pm as students were preparing to retire for the night. All students were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.

Footage obtained shows flames engulfing the dormitory as students and teachers watched helplessly from a distance.

The extent of the damage is yet to be established, but property worth millions of shillings is feared to have been destroyed, with little to none of the students’ belongings salvaged from the inferno.

Emergency response teams from the county government were later deployed to the school to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other buildings within the institution.

Authorities had not established the cause of the fire by the time of publication, with investigations expected to begin.

Saturday’s incident occurred just three days after a deadly blaze gutted a dormitory at Utumishi Girls’ Academy in Gilgil, also in Nakuru County, leaving 16 students dead.

The fire at Utumishi Girls’ broke out at around 1am on Thursday, May 28, while students were asleep, hampering efforts to escape the raging inferno.

Reports further indicated that the dormitory door had been locked from the outside, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and the events leading up to it.

Eight students were later arrested in connection with the incident as CCTV footage showed them pulling up mattresses before setting them on fire.

Following the incident, the autopsy report stated that 10 of the deceased were successfully identified. In contrast, six others were burnt beyond recognition.

The incident adds to a growing list of schools that have been burnt in recent times, especially during the second term period of learning.

Among the schools affected in recent weeks are the Miranda Boys’, Nguumo Boys’, and Magereza Academy, among others.
