United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leaders oppose the affordable housing project in Trans Nzoia urging President Ruto to reconsider his decision.

A section of leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza government are opposing President William Ruto’s affordable housing project.

The leaders, led by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) senator Alan Chesang of Trans Nzoia, have pleaded with the president to rethink and revoke the decision as it is likely to have an impact on the locals.

Chesang, a close ally of the president specifically drew attention to the fact that the affordable housing project in Trans Nzoia would result in the homelessness of 5,000 people and would interfere with the operation of public facilities like schools and hospitals, including the Cherangany Level IV Hospital.

The legislator went on to say that the president’s plan would disrupt the lives of the people who have established businesses on the land and even buried their loved ones.

He, subsequently pleaded with Ruto to rethink the decision and rescind the project.

“It is against my wish and nataka niombe serikali kuu ya kwamba we have many of our people and relatives in Trans Nzoia. People have been buried in this land, we have many of our businesses in this land. In fact, we have our schools both private and public in this land that will be affected.

“We have our hospitals for example Cherangany nursing home, this hospital is a Level IV hospital and has been helping most of our people in Trans Nzoia,” Chesang said.

While lamenting over the matter, the senator further expressed sadness over the fact that the people voted in the same government that is forcefully evicting them from their ancestral land without compensation.

“It is painful that the government that the people of Trans Nzoia County voted in are chasing them from their land. These are people that bought land from other people,” Chesang added.

“The government has brought an army that has never been seen in this area. These soldiers are marking the beacons and chasing away the residents. It is against my wish.”
