PEFA Church stands firm on accepting donations from politicians amid criticism.

The Pentecostal Evangelistic Fellowship of Africa (PEFA) has announced that it will not comply with the directive issued by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) regarding donations from politicians.

PEFA’s leadership maintained that they would continue to accept all donations and offertories, arguing they lack the means to determine whether such contributions stem from corrupt dealings.

Speaking on behalf of the church, a PEFA preacher emphasised that the funds would be directed toward meaningful projects and that the church would not return any donations already received.

“There are denominations that have said they will screen and approve the offerings they accept. As PEFA members, we currently have no way to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable offerings. Therefore, from now on, we will continue to accept all offerings and use them for good work. We will not return donations but ask that they not be made publicly,” he stated.

The church’s position comes amid public controversy, with many Kenyans raising ethical concerns over the acceptance of political donations.

Critics argue that such practices risk tarnishing the reputation of religious institutions in Kenya.

Meanwhile, the debate on political donations to churches commenced on November 19, following a directive from the Catholic Church.

The Soweto Catholic Church in Nairobi was instructed to return KSh 5.8 million in donations from President William Ruto and Governor Johnson Sakaja.

President Ruto had donated KSh 600,000 for choir members and an additional KSh 2 million for constructing a residence for the church’s priest.

He also pledged KSh 3 million for a church bus.

Catholic Bishop Philip Anyolo, who issued the directive, stated that the donations violated the church’s guidelines on accepting gifts.
