Ministry of Health has responded to reports of mystery suppliers set to receive billions from the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The Ministry of Health has clarified the alleged multi-billion shilling deal for the leasing of medical equipment from mysterious suppliers as quoted by Daily Nation in a publication dated Tuesday, December 3.
The report indicated that a new system, the National Equipment Service Project (NESP), will lease medical equipment to county-owned facilities and will be paid directly from the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The report also alleged that the suppliers would get more money than the hospital providing for the service.
In a statement, Health CS Deborah Barasa clarified that the new model was a collaborative effort between the ministry and the Council of Governors after a meeting held on December 18, 2023.
The new model, a Fixed Fee-for-Service model would allow vendors to supply, maintain and supply equipment at no upfront cost to the county health facilities.

“This model is different from the leasing option as stated in the false publication,” the CS said.
CS Barasa also indicated that seven suppliers were given the tender after a competitive bidding process that was advertised on the MyGov bulletin and the ministry’s website.
In the arrangement, suppliers invest in and place medical equipment in county health facilities at no upfront cost but will be paid for the services rendered.
“This model fosters transparency, efficiency and sustainability while enhancing healthcare delivery nationwide,” she added.
