The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially declared David Kipsang Keter of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as the winner of the Emurua Dikirr Constituency parliamentary seat.

According to a May 15 announcement by IEBC Returning Officer Caleb Gekonde, Keter received 18,266 votes, defeating Vincent Kibet Rotich of the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), who garnered 10,760 votes.

“Caleb Gekonde, the IEBC Returning Officer for Member of National Assembly for Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County, declared David Kipsang Keter of UDA Party the winner after getting 18,266 votes. Vincent Kibet Rotich of the DCP Party finished second with 10,760 votes,” the IEBC stated.

The constituency recorded a voter turnout of 66.6 per cent, with 29,538 votes cast out of 44,353 registered voters.

“I am grateful for the support the people of Emurua Dikirr have accorded me, the confidence in my leadership, and I wish to assure them that I would not let them down,” Keter said.

“I have kept up the fight and did not give up after repeatedly losing the position in previous elections. But I knew that one day, one time, the win would surely come. That time is now,” he added.

The by-election was held on May 14 to fill the open seat left after the death of former area MP Johana Ng’eno, who tragically died in a helicopter crash.

During the elections, there was a clash between UDA and DCP supporters outside Chelemei Polling Station in Kapsasian Ward after DCP supporters reportedly faced challenges accessing polling stations.

The conflict left one person injured, who was taken to the hospital, where Keter later visited them. According to IEBC officials, all other polling stations reported minimal disruptions.

Security personnel were deployed across the constituency to ensure peace during the voting process and tallying of results.

On the same day, two other by-elections were held for the Member of the County Assembly. In Porro Ward, Samburu County, Daniel Lolngojine of UDA was declared the winner with 2,328 votes, while Josphat Jumani Leleur of KANU received 1,036 votes. The ward recorded a voter turnout of 65.96 per cent, with 4,194 votes cast out of 6,358 registered voters.

In Endo Ward, Elgeyo/Marakwet County, Festus Korir Kiprop of UDA won with 4,475 votes, defeating Shadrack Kosgei Chelang’a of NDP, who got 752 votes. The ward recorded a turnout of 36.59 per cent, with 5,260 votes cast out of 14,361 registered voters.

Looking ahead, the next by-election, which will be for the Member of the National Assembly in Ol Kalou Constituency, Nyandarua County, is scheduled for Thursday, July 16.
