Mt Kenya UDA MPs give Hassan Omar 48 hours to resign from SG post

Trouble is brewing within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) after a section of leaders allied to President William Ruto gave Secretary General Hassan Omar 48 Hours to step down from his position over his recent controversial remarks.

The leaders, who stem from the Mount Kenya region, have threatened to invoke the party’s internal disciplinary mechanisms to remove the embattled Omar if he fails to voluntarily step down.

Led by Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a and her Kiambaa counterpart John Njuguna Kawanjiku, the leaders claimed Omar’s recent remarks on the Mount Kenya region were too inflammatory to overlook, as they accused the SG of issuing an insincere apology.

“As leaders, we demand the immediate and unconditional resignation of Hassan Omar as Secretary General of the UDA Party,’ a joint statement by the MPs read.

“Should he fail to tender his resignation voluntarily within 48 hours, we will formally present a joint petition to our party leader to invoke our party organs to dismiss him from his position.”

Omar courted controversy last week, during President William Ruto’s tour of the coastal region, where he appeared to blame the nationwide matatu strike on one region

The Secretary General has since issued a public apology, albeit by also adding that his remarks were taken out context by his political adversaries.

In their press conference on Wednesday, May 27, the section of UDA leaders welcomed the National Cohesion and Integration Commission’s move to investigate Omar, urging the commission to ensure the matter is fully pursued.

“We fully support the probe by the NCIC and demand that criminal prosecution for hate speech and incitement be pursued to its conclusion,” the statement went on.

In the wake of Omar’s controversial comments, the opposition, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have since accused President Ruto of being behind some inflammatory remarks being made by sections of UDA allies.

Reports have since emerged suggesting that the push to eject Hassan Omar, who has served as UDA Secretary General for less than two years, stems from efforts by a section of Mount Kenya leaders allied to the party to consolidate the region’s voting bloc ahead of future political contests.
