Nairobi Water to disconnect some estates from tomorrow as grace period lapses

The Nairobi Water Company is set to begin a crackdown on unlawful water meters in the capital, targeting residents of Utawala and Mihango estates.

According to a notice shared by the company, the crackdown will commence on Thursday, May 28, after the lapse of the 21-day grace period it had granted the residents.

In its reminder to the affected residents, the company called on them to regularise water and sewer connections to avoid being penalised.

“Final days remaining. The 21-day grace period granted to customers in Utawala and Mihango with unmetered connections ends on 28th May 2026,” the notice read in part.

According to the agency, it will officially begin a crackdown on Thursday, and those found to have connected water and sewage unlawfully will face disconnections, with hefty fines and a possible jail term.

The utility further warned that affected households and businesses could be disconnected from the main supply, with reconnection attracting a Ksh5,000 fee plus double deposit, while sewer disconnection, where applicable, will cost Ksh15,000.

“Failure to comply within the grace period will attract enforcement action without further notice,” the company added.

Customers who fail to comply risk penalties, including a Ksh30,000 fine for domestic unlawful connections and up to Ksh100,000 for commercial users, alongside backward water consumption charges dating back to October 2024.

The initial notice was issued 21 days ago, and the company has announced it will not extend the grace period following non-compliance from some businesses and residential estates.

This means that the crackdown is set to officially kick off on Thursday, May 28, with the company urging those who are yet to comply to do so before tomorrow.

“Avoid last-minute rush and possible inconvenience by regularising your water and sewer connection today,” the agency announced.

The move comes amid the company’s intensified push to roll out smart meters across the city, aimed at improving monitoring and reducing non-revenue water.
