Cambodia addresses reports of ordering all Africans to leave by end of May
The Government of Cambodia has rejected the claims that it has ordered all African nationals, including Kenyans, living within its territory to leave by the end of May.
The clarification comes hours after several media outlets quoted a fake ‘official notice’ purportedly alleging that Cambodia’s Immigration Department had ordered all African nationals to leave the country by May 31, 2026.
According to the fake notice, all Africans living in Cambodia were required to leave the country within the stipulated period or face arrest and prosecution under the country’s immigration laws.
“Any foreign national who enters, remains or is found in Cambodia from June 1, 2026, will be arrested at the airport or at any location,” the fake notice alleged.
It went on to specify that illegal immigrants found in violation of the directive would be subjected to a two-year jail term and a fine of Ksh1 million or both.
However, the Cambodian government, on Friday, May 29, issued a formal clarification terming the document as fake, urging members of the public not to fall for the allegations.
In a press statement released by the General Department of Immigration under the country’s Ministry of Interior, the government said the reports were completely untrue and warned the public against spreading misinformation.

The department specifically referenced online publications carrying headlines suggesting that Cambodia had ordered Africans to leave the country, stating that such reports did not originate from its government.
“It is fake news fabricated to distort the situation and mislead domestic and international audiences,” Ministry of Interior Spokesperson Touch Sokhak clarified.
While addressing the rumour, the Cambodian government urged its citizens and foreign nationals to rely only on official government communication channels for immigration-related information.
The fake notice has since caused concern among many Africans, including students, workers, and businesspeople who are currently living in Cambodia.
Cambodia hosts several African nationals involved in education, trade, tourism, and small businesses who are now assured of a continued stay in the Asian Country.
