EACC raids home of a government cleaner with Ksh 615m wealth and a private school

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Kakamega county head of cleaning services for allegedly acquiring wealth worth Ksh615 million through corrupt activities.
The individual is suspected to have acquired wealth through public theft and misappropriation at the expense of the public’s funds.
EACC stated that it launched thorough investigations on public officers who acquired wealth through questionable means on Sunday, September 29.
Among other things, the individual owns a private school, pieces of land, vehicles, and other high-end properties that stretch into hundreds of millions of unexplained wealth.
Additionally, the suspect also owns several restaurants and residential buildings in Kakamega County. It was revealed that the private school worth Ksh220 million is run by the spouse of the suspect.
Cursory investigations by the EACC show that the suspect owns six high-end motor vehicles and numerous prime parcels of land in different parts of the country.
The commission is in pursuit of the Ksh615 million wealth the individual has amassed through questionable means. The suspect’s wealth is not commensurate with his pay at the county.
As part of the probe, EACC raided the homes and offices of the suspect and other county officials where key documents and cash were seized.

The Commission reasonably believes the source of the suspect’s wealth emanated from kickbacks from suppliers and contractors when he served in the procurement department before he was moved to his current post as head of cleaning in Kakamega county.
Speaking during the probe, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi noted that the arrest and search operation of the head of the Kakamega County cleaning services was part of an ongoing investigation into suspected proceeds of corruption.
After the arrest, the suspect was taken to EACC Bungoma Regional Offices where he recorded a statement.
“The Commission took up the matter upon receipt of complaints that the official had accumulated unexplained wealth worth millions of shillings through kickbacks that the Commission reasonably believes he received from suppliers and contractors when he served in the Procurement Department before he was moved to his current Department,” read part of the EACC statement.
