EIGHT dead in an early morning accident

Eight people were killed in an early morning accident along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway

Eight people were killed in an early morning accident along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway.

According to reports, a trailer rammed into a 14-seater matatu that had been stopped by traffic police at the Eveready Roundabout in Nakuru.

The conductor saw the approaching trailer, which appeared to have lost its brakes and was able to escape without any injuries.

Anger-filled Kenyans confronted the Kaptembwa police, who were purportedly accepting a bribe and forced them to flee, accusing them of being responsible for the accident.

“Corruption and greed for 50 bob by our traffic police officers taking bribes from Matatus has led to deaths of many innocent souls,” a witness stated.

The survivors were flown to Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, where they are undergoing extensive treatment, according to reports.

Police officers have arrived at the scene of the accident to assess and control the situation.

The traffic jam at the roundabout is being caused by assembling masses and obstructed incoming vehicles, while traffic cops attempt to control the situation.

Investigations have been launched to probe further to affirm the actual causes of the fatal accident.

The accident comes days after two people were confirmed dead after a passenger bus collided head-on with a trailer on Sunday, December 24.

According to sources, the ill-fated bus en route to Malindi from Nairobi crashed with the truck at a spot in the Taru area of Kwale county along the Kwale-Mombasa highway.

“Two people died in a traffic road accident involving a MASH POA bus and a Mercedes Benz trailer, that occurred on December 24, 2023 morning at Taru Town Center,” police said.

Red Cross Kenya established that 19 people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the nearby Samburu Sub-County Hospital.
