Richard Lesiyampe, Former PS in Uhuru government shot at in Samburu reports to DCI after shots were fired at his convoy.

Former Agriculture Principal Secretary Richard Lesiyampe claimed that unknown people attempted to end his life.

In an address to the press on Tuesday, January 7, Lesiyampe revealed he had reported the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Samburu after an incident saw bullets hit his convoy.

According to the former PS, unnamed elements did not want him to visit parts of Samburu North and Samburu East.

“There were allegations to assassinate me for reasons I do not know,” he claimed. “It is alleged that I was not supposed to go to Baragoi in Samburu North and Samburu East. They hatched a plan to execute me for reasons I don’t know. That’s why I decided to record a statement.”

Lesiyampe further narrated how he visited Samburu North to attend a family friend’s wedding in the company of two other vehicles.

One of the vehicles in his convoy, according to Lesiyampe, went to pick up other guests the following day, and the other vehicle, belonging to the Samburu County Government, was pelted with bullets.

While revealing that a CEO and a driver were injured in the incident, Lesiyampe insists the bullets were meant to eliminate him.

He went on, “I want to say it is unconstitutional and ungodly to plan to kill people. My family has gone through a lot of drama. When this thing was splashed on social media for 2 days, it caused a lot of anxiety.”

Lesiyampe, who was appointed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital chief executive officer in February 2024 on a six-month contract, called on the DCI to investigate the alleged assassination attempt and bring those responsible to book.

He also noted a past assassination case from 2024 in Samburu County which saw Angata Nanyekie Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Paul Leshimpriro lose his life.

The late MCA’s vehicle was ambushed on Sunday morning while he was returning home from Maralal Town.  At the time, reports were rife that the killing was connected to banditry.

“We had a similar incident that happened to an MCA Paul Lishindro. He was killed in February last year and to date, no one knows who was responsible,” the former PS lamented.
